Hot hot hot, 6.26pm

Had an interesting surf today with Damian at Jan Juc. We paddled out thinking it was 2-3ft but soon discovered it was closer to 4ft, with plenty of bigger bombs to clean us up. Damian caught some cracking waves but I caught zero waves (again) on the shortboard, and about halfway through the session I cracked the shits and decided it was time to sell it and buy something else. It’s just a waste of time being out there on it. I’m there to catch waves and have a good time, not paddle like buggery only to miss wave after wave when they’re there for the taking.
I’ve given it a fair crack over the last 2 1/2 months but I simply don’t catch enough waves on it. I’s probably my fitness but I’m already surfing twice a week so if I’m not fit enough by now I probably never will be. Whatever.
So this afternoon I went back down to Torquay and traded it in for a Bourton Big Bat at Base Surfboards. It’s the board I should have bought three months ago - 6′8″ x 20.5″ x 2.5″, which isn’t much bigger than the shortboard when you look at the numbers (shortboard was 6′4″ x 19.5″ x 2.5″), but the difference is in the shape. This board has plenty of volume under the chest, which I’m assured by the experts in the shop will give me the extra kick into the waves that I’m missing.

First surf on it will be with John and Damo tomorrow morning, before golf with Iao. The forecast is for 2-3ft onshores, which isn’t great, but hopefully I’ll get onto a couple….

I’m fiddling with various mobile web sites at the moment, finding good ones and bookmarking them on my iPod Touch. Google, Google Reader, Facebook, Meebo, my blogs (I’ll set up martinjy.com with a mobile version shortly), etc.
Twitter, which I use rarely at the moment but might use more in time, has a mobile version at m.twitter.com but strangely the login page doesn’t have a “remember me”. That’s a bit crap, in my book. The point of Twitter is short, sharp updates. If I have to sign in every time I won’t bother.
* Update: I’m the dork. I signed in, THEN bookmarked. No problem.

I quite like this shot, even though it highlights the crapness of my cameraphone. Looks a bit spooky. Appropriate for Harry Potter, I suppose.
Maybe I’ll keep the k608i for a bit longer. After all, the photos I take with it are what they are when I take them. Nobody’s pretending they’re pro quality, least of all me.
Note: This one actually went through properly on the Flickr post-to-blog thing, but the Message one (previous post) didn’t. Weird.

Although I’d love to buy myself a new cameraphone so that I can email photos straight to Flickr (even though I still can’t get the upload2blog thing to work properly), the latest batch of cameraphones just doesn’t do it for me. Sure, I could upgrade to a 5.0 megapixel phone and see the quality become wayyyyyy better than the crapness of my 1.3mp K608i (witness the last few photos on this blog), but the killer feature for me with ANY phone is its size.
The K608i is 105 x 45 x 19 mm, and weighs 100g. Of all the fancy-arse phones I’ve looked at in the last few days, only the Sony Ericsson T650i beats that. But that only manages 3.2mp. I might end up with it, but for now I’m going to try carrying around our ultra-compact - the Pentax Optio W20. It’s waterproof, which means I can take shots like these:

I have a lot to learn about photography but I want to give it a red hot go in 2008 so expect a fair few photos on here in the coming months. They’ll all be uploaded to Flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/martinjy/.
