What happens if I google “Martin Young”?

I’m sure most people have googled themselves. Today I did the first all the web search for “martin young” since I started writing this blog just to see where I am. The first result that has anything to do with me is this blog at #103. The first result for me in an Australia only search for “martin young” sees an Australian Marketing Institute post about new members at #78 with this blog at #99. Not sure why the AMI post didn’t make it into the results for all-web.

I’m not surprised that this blog doesn’t rank higher. It doesn’t garner many incoming links and apart from this post I hardly ever mention my name. It’ll be interesting to see whether this post changes that and bumps me up the list.

(A search for martinjy returns this blog as #1 on both an Australia only search and all the web - but nobody’s searching for martinjy!)

Ignoring where I rank for a moment, the fun thing about googling yourself is seeing what all the other Martin Young’s of the world do. In order of today’s Google results I’m a struggling TV actor, a Palaeoclimatologist with CSIRO, a co-author of a pathology book, the complete folk entertainer, a research fellow at Charles Darwin University, a bespoke artist, a mad wizard, I was a reasonable cricketer for Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, a garden furniture maker, a stained glass artist, some sort of lawyer, a web and graphic designer, a midfielder for Hartlepool, and more. Makes me think I need an About page on this blog. Might have to get around to that shortly.

** update 7 March: “martin young” is now 53rd in an all the web Google search. No idea whether this post has had an impact or Google just likes me today….!

  1. If I Google
    - ‘the web’ for “Rob Young” one of my t-shirt designs on RedBubble comes 8th
    - ‘Australia only’ it comes up 4th

Maybe you should put something on redbubble and link back to your blog!

  2. You should also try searching Google Images for your nerdiest namesake!

    Some good Martin Youngs are:

    The funniest Rob Young is:

I’d have to say that Martin Youngs are much nerdier than Rob Youngs! There are plenty of dodgy Martins Youngs in the top 50 results compared to Rob Youngs!

We’ll see if these posts make a difference to your blog’s rankings - we’ve mentioned Martin Young several times now!!!

  3. Guess what?

Your jayneandmarty.com post about this post (titled googling yourself) comes up 10th in a ‘the web’ search for “googling yourself”! Are the 2 sites hosted in the same place? Interesting…

If you Google “google martin young” you come 4th!
