Hey eBay …

… how about concentrating on the basics?

You’ve implemented some sort of “talk to your buyer via Skype” function, but your site doesn’t work properly in Safari and parts of it are broken in Firefox.

No WYSIWIG in Safari means 10pt arial or nothing

Some busted HTML in Firefox

Skype - will anyone actually use this?

Don’t forget the core stuff, dudes.

  1. Are you really selling the boat? Remember that I own that boat! I’m expecting at least a chunk of the final sale price ;)

Oh, and I don’t get those errors in Firefox using Linux.

Aren’t Ebay pages mostly based on Javascript? Why can’t Safari handle a basic WYSISYG html editor?

  2. Safari can handle html WYSYWIG editors just fine (I use one when I write this blog), but it looks like the dudes at eBay code for IE only. I can’t find anything on their site that says “you must have browser x” though.

P.S. You realise you sound just like a Mac user circa 2001 when you evangelise Linux like that.

  3. I’m quite deliberate when I promote the benefits of Linux! - I do it more on your posts ‘because’ I sound like a Mac user! lol.

In this case though, I was purely trying to help you accurately diagnose your issue by adding another browser on another platform to the testing environment. The Ebay site is obviously NOT written for IE only, as I had no issues.

I even tried installing the Windows version of Safari on Linux using Wine - just for a laugh. It kinda worked, but didn’t like secure pages so I couldn’t log into Ebay to test this problem.

You can’t say that with 100% conviction, it might be a fluke!

I guess I’m just surprised that eBay don’t appear to be too worried about the Mac/Safari users. Sure, Apple has low overall market share vs Windows, but in the consumer segment they are kicking goals. And who is eBay’s key audience? The consumer segment.

I’m just saying they should lift their game and deliver full functionality to Mac/Safari. That’s all.
